Amsterdam, Netherlands. We had to see the windmills, try the cheese and challenge ourselves to the Haring. And so we went on an excursion to the Dutch countryside.
We arrived at the Zaanse Schans, a well known windmill village. Windmills were not very big but quite cute la. Visited the wooden shoemaker who gave us a live demo. Did you know the wood they use is retains water? After shaving and carving, shoemaker could actually shake out A LOT of liquid from the wood??? Amazing...
Next we dropped by a cheese factory. The lady who introduced the cheese was dressed in traditional Dutch costume. The smoked cheese tasted really good with the mustard. The shop sells cheese in colourful packaging. Look like soap dun you think?
The famous fishing village of Volendam is now a touristy place with a small pier for boats cruising between Volendam and Marken, another fishing village. We saw the local wooden houses, brightly coloured and decorated, canals and bridges. Serene and simple town with a touch of elegance.
Before we set out for Marken, we tried the haring...raw. It can't be any grosser. It's not as sleek and presentable like sashimi. Uncle took it out from a white chemical container. The fish was soaked in its own grey juice ( like wet market floor water). I heard its best eaten full so we requested to leave it uncut, toppled with some onions. We sat by the waters and sunk our teeth into the raw fish, very much like Golthem in LOTR. Was not too bad really. Tasty tasty...To sweeten our palette, we had some Dutch pancakes with homemade icecream. Average only.
